We're just a couple of weeks away from embarking on the adventure of a lifetime, traveling around the great Australian continent with our trusty Ram 1500 Laramie and Active Storm caravan. We've been flat-out planning our journey, and we thought we'd share our pre-trip planning process and itinerary with you blokes, along with some tips and tricks to help you plan your own epic Aussie road trip.
Creating the Perfect Aussie Itinerary
Australia is chock-a-block with stunning landscapes, fascinating wildlife, and vibrant cities, so it's essential to plan a route that covers a good mix of iconic destinations and hidden gems. We began our planning by jotting down a list of must-visit spots, including famous landmarks like Uluru, the Great Ocean Road, and the Whitsundays, as well as lesser-known treasures such as the Ningaloo Reef and the Kimberley region.
We then mapped out a rough route, factoring in driving times, distances, and the availability of caravan parks or free camping spots. To avoid spending too much time behind the wheel, we aimed for a maximum of 4-5 hours of driving per day, with plenty of time for exploring and relaxing at each destination.
Our itinerary covers a mix of coastal drives, rugged outback adventures, and city escapes, ensuring there's something for everyone in the family. We've also allocated some "wiggle room" in our schedule for spontaneous detours, extended stays, or unexpected changes in our plans.
Pre-trip Planning Tips
Do your research: Spend time reading travel blogs, guidebooks, and online forums to gather information on the best places to visit, local attractions, and insider tips for each destination.
Prioritize your must-sees: With such a vast country to explore, it's essential to narrow down your list of must-visit spots and prioritize them in your itinerary. Consider the interests and preferences of everyone in your travel group to ensure a well-rounded experience.
Be realistic about distances: Australia is a massive country, so it's important not to underestimate driving times and distances. Use online tools like Google Maps or HEMA Maps to calculate travel times and plan your route accordingly.
Book ahead: While it's tempting to adopt a "go with the flow" approach, booking accommodations and attractions in advance can save you time, money, and stress. This is especially important during peak travel seasons and for popular caravan parks, tours, and experiences.
Prepare your vehicle and caravan: Before hitting the road, make sure your Ram 1500 Laramie and Active Storm caravan are in tip-top shape. Schedule a service, check your tyres, and stock up on spare parts and tools for any unexpected repairs along the way.
Staying Safe on the Road
Safety should be your top priority when embarking on a long-term road trip around Australia. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe and sound during your travels:
Stay informed about local weather conditions: Australia's weather can be unpredictable, especially in remote areas. Check the weather forecast regularly and adjust your plans accordingly to avoid getting caught in dangerous situations, such as floods or bushfires.
Be mindful of wildlife: Keep an eye out for wildlife on the road, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active. Kangaroos, wombats, and other native creatures can cause serious damage to your vehicle if you collide with them, so stay alert and drive with caution.
Carry plenty of water and supplies: When traveling in remote areas, make sure you have enough water, food, and fuel to last for several days in case of an emergency or unexpected detour.
Know your limits: While it's tempting to push through long driving days to reach your next destination, it's important to listen to your body and take regular breaks to rest and recharge. Fatigue can be a major cause of accidents on the road, so don't be afraid to pull over and take a break when needed.
Pack a comprehensive first aid kit: Accidents and injuries can happen anywhere, so it's essential to have a well-stocked first aid kit on hand. Familiarise yourself with the contents and know how to use them in case of an emergency.
